SALINA

Salina, the greenest of the Aeolian Islands

Salina is one of the largest of the Aeolian Islands, the second largest after Lipari, and is characterized by the fact that it houses three distinct municipalities: Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina Salina in which a total of just over two thousand inhabitants live.

It is also the only island of the Aeolian archipelago not to be administered by the municipality of Lipari. The island of Salina is renowned for the production of "capers" and "malvasia", a characteristic wine with a very sweet and aromatic taste derived from raisins, vaguely similar to raisin. The most beautiful and evocative beach of the island is the one existing in the bay of Pollara, which is located inside an ancient crater which has for the most part collapsed.

Also in Pollara it is possible to see, from a distance, the house where the film "Il Postino" was filmed, with Philippe Noiret in the role of Pablo Neruda and the unforgettable Massimo Troisi in the part of the postman.

On the island, formed by six extinct volcanoes, there are the highest peaks of the Aeolian archipelago: the 961 m high “Fossa delle Felci” mountain. and the "Monte dei Porri", 860 meters high. From these two extinct volcanoes comes the ancient Greek name Didyme, which means twins. The current name, Salina, derives from a small lake from which salt was extracted.

Defined the Green Island for the luxuriant vegetation that covers most of the surface, the island offers a very pleasant climate even during the winter period, in which it is never too cold.
